Fireplace scale
A tall firebox, chimney, hearth and structural footing make an outdoor fireplace materially more complex than a low fire ring.
Plan the whole project
Price the feature, fuel connection, seating surface, permits and installation — not just the fire bowl.
No new seating surface is included.
Set to 0 ft if a suitable connection already reaches the feature.
Municipal and fuel-gas rules vary by location.
Raise for difficult access, premium labour or remote delivery; lower for competitive markets.

How the numbers work
The calculator combines an estimated fire-feature shell, base preparation, fuel hardware or utility work, a seating surface, municipal permit allowance, installation labour and contingency. Canadian defaults use October 2026 retail listings, a 2026 Canadian patio cost guide and published 2026 municipal fee schedules where available. The feature, base, fuel, labour and surface-rate assumptions are all labeled estimates and directly editable.
For a gas or propane build, keep certified equipment and licensed trade work in the budget. For wood, check your municipality before construction: a product being sold locally does not mean it can legally be burned in every yard.
The biggest cost drivers
A tall firebox, chimney, hearth and structural footing make an outdoor fireplace materially more complex than a low fire ring.
Natural gas gets expensive when trenching is long or crosses finished hardscape. The calculator exposes the run length instead of hiding it.
A 300 sq ft paver lounge can cost more than a modest pit. Keep the seating-area size honest.
Call your local utility-locate service, verify property setbacks and ask the fire department whether wood-burning is allowed. Toronto, for example, prohibits recreational wood fire pits while allowing compliant outdoor propane and natural-gas fire pits.5

FAQ
A portable metal unit can start in the low hundreds, while a custom masonry pit with a new patio and gas line can reach several thousand. Use the calculator for an itemized estimate based on your exact feature, fuel, finish, area and installation plan.
Usually, yes. An outdoor fireplace normally needs more masonry, a firebox, a chimney or venting path, a larger footing and more skilled labour. The difference grows with natural stone and custom detailing.
It depends on the municipality, fuel and scope. Wood burning may be prohibited, restricted to rural zones or require a permit. A new natural-gas line may require a separate trade permit and licensed installation. Check locally before construction.
Wood is often cheapest to install if local bylaws allow it. A portable propane unit can avoid trenching. Natural gas usually costs more upfront because of the permanent line, but it is convenient once installed.
For a simple four-chair layout, 150–200 sq ft is a useful planning range. Larger lounge seating or built-in benches may need 250–400 sq ft or more, while required clearances can increase the footprint further.
A straightforward wood pit or listed propane kit may suit an experienced DIYer if local rules and manufacturer instructions allow it. Gas piping, complex masonry, structural footings and outdoor fireplaces are better handled by qualified professionals.
The estimate excludes sales tax, major demolition, tree removal, retaining walls, drainage remediation, electrical service upgrades, furniture, fuel and annual maintenance. Use the local adjustment for access or market conditions, then obtain site-specific quotes.
