What does a home bar cost in 2026?

Most of the spread comes from cabinetry, utility work and appliances—not size alone. Use these broad installed ranges before contractors inspect the space.

Furniture-style dry bar

$1,200–$6,500

Prefabricated cabinet or freestanding unit, usually without plumbing.

Simple built-in

$8,000–$15,000

Stock cabinetry, a basic counter and fridge-ready electrical.

Custom wet bar

$15,000–$35,000

Sink, millwork, stone, lighting and refrigeration.

Luxury wall

$35,000–$75,000+

Premium millwork, integrated appliances and complex utilities.

Wet bar vs. dry bar cost

The best layout starts with how you entertain, not with a catalogue photo.

Dry bar

A dry bar stores bottles, glassware and refrigeration without a sink. It is usually the least expensive and easiest to place because it can avoid plumbing. A short cabinet run with a beverage fridge can deliver most of the function for occasional entertaining.

Wet bar

A wet bar adds a sink and drain. It pays off when drinks are made often, when the main kitchen is far away or when cleanup matters. Locate it against a bathroom, laundry or kitchen plumbing wall when possible.

Walk-up versus seated bar

A walk-up service wall saves floor area. A seated peninsula or island needs counter overhang, stools and a clear path behind them. The extra finished panels, counter area and floor work make seated layouts costlier.

Home bar cabinet and countertop costs

Cabinetry is usually the largest controllable line item. Countertop minimum charges also make small bars more expensive per square foot than larger kitchens.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend on drawer hardware, moisture-resistant cabinet interiors and a counter suited to spills. Save by using a standard cabinet depth, limiting decorative end panels, selecting open shelves instead of a full wall of glass-front uppers and choosing common appliance widths before millwork is ordered.

Wet bar plumbing and electrical cost

Utilities are the highest-variance part of the project because they depend on what is behind the wall and below the floor.

Plumbing

A sink near an existing supply and drain is the simplest case. Moving across a basement may require opening finished walls or concrete, adding venting and working around foundation conditions. Ice makers and some dishwashers add both supply and drainage requirements.

Electrical

Confirm the loads before buying appliances. Refrigeration, a dishwasher, an ice maker and countertop receptacles may need more than one circuit. Under-cabinet and display lighting should be designed before cabinet fabrication so wires and drivers remain hidden.

Permits and licensed trades

Rules vary by municipality. Plumbing and electrical work commonly require permits or inspections and qualified trades. Ask who pulls permits, who schedules inspection and whether the quoted price includes both.

Home bar appliance and stocking budget

Separate built-in infrastructure from bottles and accessories. That keeps a renovation quote comparable and makes upgrades easier to postpone.

Core appliance package

A beverage fridge, task lighting and accessible outlets cover most homes. A wine cooler is worthwhile when temperature control matters. Ice makers, dishwashers and draft systems are convenience upgrades that can multiply plumbing, electrical and maintenance needs.

Opening-day barware

Start with the drinks you actually serve: a small set of durable glasses, shaker, jigger, strainer, bar spoon, opener, ice bucket and cutting board. Add specialized glassware only after the basics earn shelf space.

Stocking without waste

Choose a compact base of spirits or alcohol-free bottles, two or three versatile mixers, fresh citrus and a few shelf-stable garnishes. A smaller, deliberate bar costs less and avoids expired mixers.

How to get comparable home bar quotes

A low bid is only useful when it includes the same scope. Give each qualified contractor the same written brief.

Measure and photograph

Record wall length, ceiling height, doors, bulkheads, outlets and the nearest utilities. Include wide shots and close-ups of the plumbing route and panel.

Fix the three anchors

Name the cabinetry grade, countertop material and appliance package. Let decorative details remain alternates so each bidder can price the same core job.

Ask for exclusions

Confirm demolition, disposal, delivery, permits, hardware, wall repair, flooring, paint, appliance hookups, tax, cleanup and warranty. Request allowances separately from fixed labour.

Home bar cost FAQ

Is a wet bar much more expensive than a dry bar?

Usually. A sink adds fixtures, supply, drainage, labour and often permits. A location beside an existing plumbing wall is usually less costly than crossing a finished room or cutting a slab.

How much room does a home bar need?

A compact straight bar can fit a 4- to 6-foot run. Eight feet gives more useful cabinet and appliance space. A seated bar also needs room for counter overhang, stools and circulation.

What upgrades have the biggest budget impact?

Full custom millwork, long plumbing runs, premium stone, integrated refrigeration, ice makers and complex lighting are the biggest jumps.

Should I budget a contingency?

Yes. This calculator includes 10%. Existing walls can hide undersized wiring, awkward drains, moisture damage or framing changes.

Does this estimate include tax?

No. Tax rules differ by location and contractor. Ask every bidder whether tax, permit fees, disposal and delivery are included.

How long does a wet bar installation take?

A straightforward bar may take a few weeks once materials arrive. Custom millwork and stone fabrication have longer lead times; permits and complex utility work can extend the schedule.
