A lower installed price can be useful, but moisture tolerance, repairability and expected life matter too. These comparisons reuse your current room size and project settings.

A quote worth comparing

Ask each installer to price the same scope. A one-line per-square-foot number is not enough.

  • Exact product, grade, wear-layer thickness and quantity
  • Acclimation, moisture testing and installation method
  • Removal, haul-away and floor protection
  • Subfloor levelling allowance and repair rate
  • Underlayment, adhesive, fasteners and transitions
  • Baseboard removal, reinstalling and paint touch-ups
  • Workmanship warranty, schedule and payment milestones
Older floor? Stop before demolition if the home may contain asbestos-bearing tile, sheet flooring or adhesive. Testing and certified abatement belong outside a normal flooring quote.

Measure once. Quote apples to apples.

  1. Sketch each room

Break L-shaped spaces into rectangles. Measure closets, halls and connected rooms separately.

  2. Add the rectangles

Multiply length by width for each area, then add them. Enter the total square footage above.

  3. Choose a realistic overage

Use 7% for a simple straight lay, 10% for a typical project and 15% for patterns or many cuts.

  4. Get three itemized quotes

Send the copied brief to local installers and compare scope, not just the grand total.

Flooring cost questions

Why does the calculator use a range?

Flooring prices change with product grade, layout, site access, room size and the condition underneath the old floor. A range is more honest than a single number before an installer has measured the space and inspected the subfloor.

Does the estimate include sales tax?

No. Every result is in Canadian dollars before GST, HST or provincial sales tax. Apply the tax rate for the province where the work is performed to a contractor’s final taxable subtotal.

Should I buy exactly the measured square footage?

No. Cuts, defects and future repairs require overage. Seven to ten percent is common for simple straight layouts; patterned installations and rooms with many angles may need about fifteen percent.

Is engineered hardwood cheaper than solid hardwood?

Often, but not always. Premium engineered boards with a thick wear layer can cost as much as solid wood. Engineered products may offer more installation options, especially over concrete or below grade.

Can I use this result as a contractor quote?

No. It is a planning benchmark. Use the downloaded estimate to define your scope, then ask qualified local installers for itemized written quotes based on an on-site inspection.
