Guide: lawn mowing cost by yard size

What should lawn mowing cost?

Most residential mowing is priced per visit rather than strictly by the hour. Published U.S. guides place a recurring visit around $30–$85 for roughly ⅛–¼ acre, while larger or difficult lawns can run well beyond that. Canadian guides commonly place a standard suburban lawn around C$50–$70 per cut.

Mowable areaTypical U.S. recurring rangeWhat changes the quote
Under 2,000 sq ft$30–$45Minimum trip charge often matters more than mowing time.
About ⅛ acre$30–$50Fences, beds and push-only access can move the price upward.
About ¼ acre$45–$85A common suburban range; regular weekly service is usually cheapest per cut.
About ½ acre$50–$100Wide gates and rider access can keep the quote close to smaller lawns.
About 1 acre$60–$180Open acreage is faster; slopes and trim-heavy edges take longer.
2 acres$100–$310Equipment, travel and obstacle density drive the spread.
Measure mowable grass, not total lot size. A 10,000 sq ft parcel may have only 5,000 sq ft of turf after subtracting the house, driveway, patio, beds and other hardscape.

Guide: weekly vs. biweekly lawn service cost

Frequency changes more than the invoice count.

Less frequent mowing usually costs more per visit because taller grass may need slower travel, extra passes or bagging. The right cadence follows growth, not a rigid calendar.

Weekly mowing

Best during fast spring growth and for a consistently manicured look. Each visit is usually cheaper, and crews can mulch manageable clippings rather than haul them away.

Choose weekly when rain and fertilizer produce rapid growth, or when no more than one-third of the grass blade can be removed safely on a longer schedule.

Every two weeks

Can reduce total seasonal spend during dry or slow-growth periods, but the per-cut quote may rise roughly 20–40% in some markets. It is a poor fit when turf becomes tall enough to clump.

Ask whether the contractor changes cadence seasonally instead of billing a fixed number of unnecessary visits.

What a basic visit should define

  • Cutting height and whether clippings are mulched.
  • String trimming around fences, beds and structures.
  • Blowing clippings off walkways and hard surfaces.
  • Whether gates must be unlocked and pets kept inside.

Common surcharges

  • First cut on tall or neglected grass.
  • Bagging and off-site clipping disposal.
  • Hard edging along sidewalks or curbs.
  • Narrow access, steep banks or excessive obstacles.

Guide: push mower vs. riding mower

Buy the right machine—or don’t buy one.

Ownership makes sense only when the equipment matches the lawn and you will use it long enough. These 2026 U.S. planning ranges are equipment-only before tax, storage, fuel, batteries or repairs.

UNDER 2,000 SQ FT

Manual reel

$70–$200

No fuel, near-silent and simple to maintain. Struggles with tall grass and uneven ground.

Best for: tiny, flat lawns

½–2 ACRES

Riding tractor

$2,500–$5,500

Comfortable on open lawns and useful with attachments. Needs storage and engine maintenance.

Best for: large open properties

1+ ACRE / OBSTACLES

Zero-turn

$3,500–$8,500+

Fast and nimble around trees and beds. The premium is hard to justify on smaller yards.

Best for: large complex lawns

Deck width is not automatically better. Before buying a rider, measure the narrowest gate, storage opening and tightest route between beds. A 42-inch deck that cannot reach the backyard is the wrong mower.

Guide: lawn mower ownership cost

Sticker price is only year one.

The calculator’s DIY figure combines a mower allowance with your time value. For a real ownership comparison, add the expenses below and divide the useful life across the seasons you expect to keep the machine.

Annualize the machine

Subtract expected resale value from purchase price, then divide by expected years of ownership. Avoid assuming a long life without maintenance.

Add operating costs

Include fuel or electricity, oil, filters, spark plugs, blades, battery replacement, repairs and pickup or delivery for service.

Price your time

Count mowing, trimming, cleanup, fueling, charging and maintenance—not only time behind the mower.

When DIY tends to win

You already own suitable equipment, enjoy the work, have safe storage, and can mow reliably during peak growth. Small, open lawns create the shortest and least expensive DIY sessions.

When service tends to win

Storage is limited, terrain is risky, a rider would require a large purchase, or schedule and health make consistent mowing difficult. Service also transfers repair downtime to the contractor.

Guide: seasonal lawn care costs

Budget beyond the mower.

Mowing controls height; it does not fix compacted soil, thin turf or nutrient problems. Add treatments because the lawn needs them—not because a package includes them.

ServicePublished planning rangeWhen it may be useful
Aeration$75–$250 per visitCompacted soil, heavy foot traffic or poor water infiltration.
Overseeding$100–$350 for smaller treatmentsThin turf and bare areas; broad seeding projects may cost substantially more.
Fertilization$50–$200 per applicationWhen soil and grass condition support a nutrient application.
Weed control$60–$150 per treatmentActive broadleaf or grassy weeds; treatment type and local rules matter.
Dethatching$160–$225Only when the thatch layer is excessive—not as a routine annual default.
Seasonal cleanup$190–$1,000Leaves, branches, bed cleanup and haul-away; scope creates a wide range.

Spring planning

  • Start mowing when grass is actively growing and reasonably dry.
  • Inspect bare patches before buying seed or sod.
  • Sharpen blades; a torn cut can leave ragged brown tips.
  • Ask for a soil test before a large fertilizer program.

Fall planning

  • Cool-season lawns are often renovated in early fall.
  • Aeration and overseeding are frequently paired where compaction and thinning coexist.
  • Continue mowing while growth continues.
  • Clarify whether leaf removal is included or billed separately.

Guide: how to hire a lawn care service

Turn the estimate into a quote contractors can answer.

Send the same scope to at least three insured lawn-care companies. Comparable scope is more useful than simply asking each company, “How much?”

  1. Give the mowable area—not the full lot size.
  2. State gate width, slope, obstacles and grass condition.
  3. Ask whether trimming, blowing, bagging and tax are included.
  4. Confirm rain delays, skipped visits and cancellation terms.
  5. Request proof of liability insurance and applicable worker coverage.

Compare the contract, not just the cut.

A low quote may exclude work another company includes. Read the service agreement and ask how changes are approved before the crew arrives.

Lawn care cost FAQ

Answers before you decide

The cheapest route depends on more than the sticker price. Time, storage, terrain and how many seasons you expect to mow can change the answer.

How does the calculator estimate a visit?

It uses a size-based curve anchored to 2026 published service ranges, then adjusts for frequency, terrain, grass condition and disposal. It provides a planning range rather than a contractor quote.

Does “lawn area” mean the entire lot?

No. Subtract the home, driveway, patios, gardens, pool and other non-grass surfaces. Online parcel maps can help, but a measuring wheel or careful dimensions will be more accurate.

How much does lawn mowing cost per hour?

Published U.S. guides commonly show about $40–$80 per hour, but most residential companies quote a flat visit price. A flat price may include travel, loading, equipment and overhead that are not visible in on-site minutes.

Is weekly or biweekly mowing cheaper?

Biweekly service means fewer invoices, but each cut may cost more because the grass is taller. Compare the full-season total and ask whether cadence can change during drought or fast spring growth.

When does a riding mower become worthwhile?

Usually when a lawn approaches half an acre and is open enough for a wide deck. A smaller, obstacle-heavy lawn may still be faster with a self-propelled push mower.

Why is one-time service more expensive?

Recurring routes let crews reduce travel, predict workload and cut grass before it becomes difficult. One-time work has more uncertainty and often requires extra passes.

Should lawn clippings be bagged?

Fine, healthy clippings can usually be mulched back into the turf. Bagging may make sense when grass is excessively tall, diseased or too wet to disperse cleanly. Ask whether disposal is included.

How many quotes should I get?

Three comparable written quotes are a practical baseline. Send each contractor the same area, frequency, access notes and desired scope so the numbers mean the same thing.
