01 / COST DRIVERS

How moving costs are calculated

A mover is pricing labour, truck time, shipment size and risk. Local jobs are usually time-driven; longer routes shift toward distance and the size or weight of the shipment.

LABOUR

Crew × hours

Home size sets the likely crew and loading time. Stairs, elevators, disassembly and long carries add time even when the distance is short.

TRANSPORT

Distance & truck

Local quotes may add travel time or a truck charge. Long-distance quotes typically price the route and shipment size together.

SERVICES

Packing & storage

Packing labour, cartons, specialty handling, valuation coverage and storage-in-transit can materially change the total.

02 / PRICING MODELS

Local vs. long-distance moving costs

This calculator switches models at 80 km. That threshold is a planning convention, not an industry rule—ask each mover how it classifies your route.

Local move

Usually hourly
  • Often a 2–4 hour minimum
  • Crew size changes the hourly rate
  • Travel time or a truck fee may apply
  • Access delays directly add billable time

Long-distance move

Shipment + route
  • Weight or cubic volume matters more
  • Distance and delivery window affect price
  • Shuttles, ferries and storage may be separate
  • Ask whether the quote is binding or adjustable
03 / QUOTE QUALITY

How to get accurate moving quotes

Canadian Association of Movers guidance recommends written estimates from at least three companies. Give every bidder the same information so price differences are meaningful.

  1. Build one room-by-room inventoryCount furniture, appliances, boxes and heavy or fragile pieces. Video walkthroughs help reveal volume and access.
  2. Describe both addressesList stairs, elevator booking rules, loading docks, walking distance, parking restrictions and doorway limits.
  3. Fix the service scopeState who packs, supplies cartons, disassembles furniture and arranges appliance servicing.
  4. Request an itemized written estimateAsk for labour, travel, fuel, minimums, storage, valuation, taxes and possible extra charges.
  5. Compare terms—not only totalsConfirm payment schedule, cancellation rules, claims process, delivery window and subcontractors.
04 / BUYER BEWARE

Red flags in moving quotes

A low number is not a bargain if the scope is vague. Canadian consumer guidance warns about quotes far below competitors, uncertain company identity and poor documentation.

!
A dramatically low quote

If one estimate is far below the others, ask what inventory, hours and fees were omitted.

!
No written detail

A verbal total without service scope, company identity and payment terms is hard to enforce.

!
Pressure for a large deposit

CAM notes that most professional movers do not request money up front. Clarify deposit and refund terms.

!
Blank or incomplete paperwork

Never sign missing fields. Review the bill of lading and loss-or-damage coverage before loading.

!
Unverified identity

Confirm the business address, insurance, workers’ compensation, references and who will actually carry the shipment.

!
Cash-only or unclear payment

Insist on an invoice and understand payment timing before moving day.

05 / LOWER THE BILL

How to save money on a move

Reduce paid time and shipped volume first. Those levers usually matter more than shaving a few dollars off the advertised hourly rate.

01

Move less

Sell, donate or recycle before the estimate. Long-distance pricing especially rewards lower shipment weight.

02

Choose a flexible date

Ask about midweek and mid-month availability, and avoid peak dates if your lease allows.

03

Be move-day ready

Finish boxes, labels and furniture disassembly before the crew clock starts.

04

Protect truck access

Reserve elevators and loading areas. Shorter carries mean less labour time.

05

Compare total cost

A larger crew can finish faster. Compare projected hours × rate, not hourly rate alone.

06

Pack selectively

DIY standard items and pay professionals only for fragile, high-value or difficult rooms.

07

Avoid storage handoffs

Align possession dates where possible; warehouse handling can add both labour and risk.

08

Keep scope stable

Tell the mover about additions early. Last-minute inventory changes undermine an estimate.

06 / FAQ

Moving cost questions

Short answers to the questions people ask before requesting a quote.

How much do movers cost in Canada?

There is no single national price. Local moves are commonly billed by crew time, while long-distance moves depend more on shipment size and route. Published Toronto rates vary by crew and date, which is why this calculator uses a range rather than a single promise.

What is the cheapest day to move?

Midweek and mid-month dates often have better availability than weekends and month-end. Pricing still depends on local demand, so ask each mover for its least-expensive nearby date.

Do stairs and elevators increase moving costs?

Usually, because they add handling time. An elevator can also add waiting and reservation windows; a well-managed service elevator may be faster than stairs. Describe access at both addresses.

How much should I budget above a moving quote?

A 10–20% planning cushion can absorb extra packing, access delays or minor inventory changes. The calculator displays a 15% cushion. A detailed written quote should still be your primary budget document.

Should I tip movers?

Tips are optional and are not included in this estimate. If you choose to tip, base it on service quality and your budget rather than assuming a mandatory percentage.

How many moving quotes should I get?

At least three written estimates is the Canadian Association of Movers recommendation. Give each company the same inventory and access information.

Is the lowest moving quote the best?

Not necessarily. Compare the inventory, minimum hours, travel fees, coverage, claims process and company credentials. A low quote with missing scope can become expensive later.

What is usually excluded from a moving estimate?

Possible exclusions include packing materials, specialty items, long carries, shuttles, elevator delays, appliance servicing, storage, additional valuation coverage and sales tax. Ask for a written list.

Methodology: The calculator is an independent budgeting model, not a market quote. Local estimates combine assumed crew hours, crew rates, travel, access and selected services. Long-distance estimates combine an estimated household shipment weight with a distance-sensitive transport factor, then add selected services. Results show an 85%–125% planning range and exclude sales tax. Outbound quote buttons may be replaced with tracked partner links; if that happens, the site may earn compensation without increasing the visitor’s price.
