What the calculator assumes

These are NorthPeak planning estimates in 2026 Canadian dollars. They are deliberately shown as ranges because local labour, access, engineering, snow-load requirements and delivery can move a quote materially.

Prefab shed kit

C$18–C$55 / sq ft

Estimated structure package before material adjustment. Calibrated to current Canadian shed retail listings.

Custom shed

C$45–C$85 / sq ft

Estimated materials and fabrication package; assembly is itemized separately.

Gazebo kit

C$9–C$30 / sq ft

Estimated kit-only range. A 10 × 12 steel hardtop example was listed at C$1,198.2

Custom gazebo

C$38–C$78 / sq ft

Estimated structure package for a site-built open structure; engineering and screens are not included.

Method & reality check

Built from Canadian benchmarks, adjustable for your yard

Home Depot Canada’s 2026 retail snapshot shows storage sheds spanning several hundred dollars to more than C$5,000, depending on size and construction.1 The calculator turns that uneven catalog into a per-square-foot planning range, then applies a material factor: metal 0.90×, vinyl/resin 1.00× and wood 1.15×.

Foundation estimates are C$6–C$12 per square foot for compacted gravel and C$8–C$15 for a small concrete pad. The concrete range sits above HomeStars’ national C$5–C$10 installed benchmark because small backyard pours often face mobilization, access and base-preparation minimums; HomeStars also notes C$500–C$2,000 for difficult site preparation.3 Gravel and all labour rates are NorthPeak estimates, not published tariffs.

  • Professional kit assembly: estimated C$10–C$20 per sq ft, with a project minimum.
  • Professional custom construction: estimated C$30–C$55 per sq ft.
  • DIY allowance: estimated C$150–C$400 for anchors, consumables or tool rental.
  • US mode: converts the Canadian model with the editable CAD-to-USD planning rate; it is not a live foreign-exchange quote.
Before you buy: verify setbacks, lot coverage, utilities and permit rules. Niagara Falls, for example, summarizes an Ontario exemption for qualifying storage-only structures up to 15 m², while other accessory uses use a 10 m² threshold.5

Common questions

FAQ

How much does a shed cost in Canada in 2026?

For planning, this calculator models prefab shed kits at an estimated C$18–C$55 per square foot before foundation and assembly, and custom sheds at an estimated C$45–C$85 per square foot for the structure package. Actual Canadian retail examples and contractor quotes vary widely by size, snow-load rating, doors, windows and delivery.

How much does a gazebo cost in Canada in 2026?

For planning, this calculator models gazebo kits at an estimated C$9–C$30 per square foot before foundation and assembly, and custom gazebos at an estimated C$38–C$78 per square foot for the structure package. A current Canadian retail benchmark is a 10-by-12-foot steel hardtop gazebo listed at C$1,198, but premium timber kits and custom builds can cost much more.

Is a gravel pad or concrete slab better for a shed?

A compacted gravel pad drains well and is often the lower-cost choice for a storage shed. Concrete is more permanent and better suited to heavy equipment, workshops or structures that need a rigid floor. Soil, frost, drainage and the manufacturer’s anchoring instructions should decide the final foundation.

Do I need a permit for a shed or gazebo in Ontario?

It depends on use, size and municipality. Niagara Falls summarizes the Ontario Building Code exemption for a detached, one-storey storage-only structure of no more than 15 square metres with no plumbing, while other uses have a 10-square-metre threshold. Zoning, setbacks and lot-coverage rules can still apply, so check locally before ordering.

How much can DIY assembly save?

DIY can remove most of the assembly labour line, but the calculator keeps an estimated C$150–C$400 allowance for anchors, consumables or tool rental. Large hardtop gazebos and heavy shed panels usually need several capable adults, and some warranties require specific anchoring or installation steps.

Are delivery, tax and electrical work included?

No. The estimate includes the selected structure package, foundation, assembly, permit allowance and contingency. Sales tax, delivery surcharges, demolition, grading, electrical work, insulation, interior finishing and landscaping are excluded unless they are already included in a supplier or contractor quote.
