How the estimate works
Methodology & sources
- Usage → system size: annual kWh = monthly bill ÷ your rate × 12. Ontario rooftop systems produce roughly 1,150 kWh per kW per year; system kW = annual kWh ÷ 1,150 ÷ shading factor, rounded to the nearest 0.5 kW.
- Installed pricing: $2.42–$3.50 per watt (Ontario, 2026), the published range from Ontario installer market data (solar-x.ca 2026 cost guide; greenbuildingcanada.ca 2026 Ontario breakdown). Roof-type multipliers: flat +6%, tile/slate/cedar +10%.
- HRS rebate: Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program pays $1,000/kW of solar (capped at $5,000) and $300/kWh of battery (capped at $5,000), combined max $10,000, covering up to 50% of eligible costs. Pre-approval is mandatory before installation.
- Payback: net cost ÷ first-year bill savings, using your stated rate and the shading-adjusted yield. Ignores rate inflation (which shortens payback) and panel degradation (which lengthens it).
Incentive status (verified October 2026)
- Canada Greener Homes Grant: closed to new applicants (February 2024). Do not budget around it.
- Canada Greener Homes Loan (interest-free up to $40,000): closed to new applicants (October 1, 2025). Not available for new projects.
- Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program: open — the current rebate path for solar + battery. Must apply and be pre-approved before any equipment is purchased.
- Net metering: available through Ontario local distribution companies for non-HRS systems (1:1 bill credits). You generally choose HRS rebate or net metering, not both.
Estimates are for early budgeting only. Panel layout, electrical panel capacity, ESA permits, and utility interconnection all affect the final quote.
Solar in Ontario: common questions
How much does residential solar cost in Ontario in 2026?
Installed costs run $2.42–$3.50 per watt. A typical 7.5–10 kW home system lands around $18,000–$30,000 before incentives; the HRS rebate can take up to $5,000 off solar alone ($10,000 with a battery).
Is the Canada Greener Homes Loan still available?
No. It closed to new applicants on October 1, 2025, and the Greener Homes Grant closed in February 2024. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program is the active rebate path in 2026.
Should I take the HRS rebate or net metering?
You generally pick one. The HRS rebate gives up to $10,000 upfront but the system must use load displacement (no exporting to the grid). Net metering gives 1:1 bill credits for exported power over 12 months. A site assessment should model both for your roof and usage.
What is the payback period?
Typically 7–11 years in Ontario depending on system size, shading, your electricity rate, and which incentive path you take. Rising rates shorten it.
Does my roof need replacing first?
If your shingles have less than ~10 years of life left, most installers recommend re-roofing first — removing and reinstalling panels later costs thousands. Metal roofs are ideal solar hosts.
